Vikings Weekend to Montreal

May 9th, 2009

The Vikings Cricket Club started their 2009 season with a bang!

Despite weather conditions that were not ideal for cricket, VCC managed to play two games against the Pakcan Cricket Club in Montreal, Quebec.

Both games were won by VCC in an impressive and convincing fashion.

On the first day of the trip, Vikings batted first and posted a formidable 278 for 5. Batting linchpin Zamal Khan entertaining with a superb 95 that allowed him to earn MVP honours, while young opener Pardeep Saini hit a brisky 78 to provide the impetus for the healthy total. When it came Vikings’ turn to field, the bowlers were clinically efficient in dismissing Pakcan for a mere 71 runs. The main destroyer was quickie Kevin Murray with the first 5-wicket haul of the season, which also gave him an MVP award (donated by the Pakcan side).

On the second day of the tour, Pakcan decided to field a combined team with Centennial Cricket Club. This was not enough to stop the Vikings juggernaut from steaming its way ahead. Under cold and windy conditions that were deceptively sunny, Pakcan won the toss and decided to bat, but only fared slightly better than the previous day in posting 104. Once again, all of the Vikings bowlers were among the wickets, with former Guyana fast-bowler Naresh Roopnarine capturing 3 scalps. In their turn at the crease, VCC had another entertaining knock from the hard-hitting Pardeep Saini, who made 38, along with 24 quick and clinical runs from Shoaib Asif, who remained unbeaten.

This capped off a successful mini-tour for the Vikings, who will hope that the results in these warm-ups will be repeated throughout the course of the season.
