The Championship smell is in the air! The Elite and Second Division Teams of Vikings Cricket Club have made the TDCA Divisional Playoffs for 2012!

The Elite boys will be squaring up against their arch rivals, Brampton Masters Cricket Club, on Saturday September 29 at King City 1A (the turf wicket). This semi-final clash will take place at the same time as the other Elite semi-final (featuring Centurions CC and Toronto CC), with the winners of the two semis going head-to-head in the grand final on the following day at King City 1A. If all goes according to plan, that will be 2 days of glorious and victorious Vikings Elite cricket to savor for players, management and fans alike - so come out and support!

Additionally, the 2nd division team has qualified for the playoffs, topping the Wilson Conference and earning the right to face off against Civics CC. Details of date and venue will follow soon. The club wants to have their trophy cabinet as filled as can be, so let’s support the 2nd D boys as they pursue another Vikings title!

Onwards to championship glory, good luck to all of our players! LET’S GO VIKINGS!!!

Vikings Cricket Club’s Durand Soraine showed his mettle with the ball, taking 2 for 59 in 10 overs in Canada’s ICC World Cricket League Championship match against Scotland on July 12. Played at the Cambusdoon New Ground in Ayr, Scotland, Canada batted first and made 176 all out. Soraine made just 6 off 5 balls while batting at number 8, but he hit a 4 in the process of trying to speed up the Canadian scoring.

When given the new ball against the Scots, Soraine bowled both JH Davey and RD Berrington - he was reported to have hit Davey’s middle stump, and was said to have removed Berrington with a beauty that the batsman played all around. Scotland, though, ultimately reached their target for the loss of 6 wickets.

In all, while his team could not manage a win, Soraine certainly acquitted himself well, and has surely continued his ascent up the Canadian ranks.

Well done Durand!

“We had a double-header weekend, and we took a maximum of 12 points! Well done boys!”

These were the words and sentiments of Vikings management and players alike as the Elite team swept aside Gujarat CC by 35 runs at King City 1C on July 8th.

Vikingscricket.com was on hand to take in much of the match, which saw Vikings win the toss and choose to bat in bright and clear conditions. Vikings produced a chequered batting performance, eventually compiling 218 all out at the stroke of their 50th over of batting. Opener Chris Vernon made 35 (6×4) to support number 3 Abdool Samad, who top-scored with 48 (5×4, 1×6), but great credit has to be given to Ian Baldeo (25 with 1×4, 2×6) and Hardik Kotak (32), who both saw Vikings through to its total after being eight down for just 160.

With 218 runs in the tins on what was a somewhat slow and gripping track, Vikings once again turned to their bowling lineup to deliver the goods and see them through. Things did not start off particularly well, however, as Gujarat scored at a frenetic pace for the loss of just a few wickets to be at 88 for 2 at approximately the 15-over mark. As they say in cricket, though, it just takes one wicket to trigger a collapse, and after left armer spinner Tyrone Roberts took the third wicket at 89, Vikings soon found their opponents at 140-9 thanks to superb work from Ian Baldeo, who was simply miserly in taking 3-19 from 10 overs (including 2 maidens). Roberts took 2-36 in 10, Kenneth Kamyuka ended up with 2-59 in 10, and Jason Patraj came on late to also take 3 wickets (in 8 overs for 23 runs) to all support Baldeo’s good work. Eventually, after some last wicket resistance, Gujarat were all out for 183 in 47 overs.

With a highly successful weekend under their belts, Vikings can bask in pride as they sit atop of Conference 2 of the Elite Division with 42 points from 9 games played. Their next challenge is a resurgent Victoria Park CC team on Saturday July 14 at King City 1B. While every game is tough, the team has shown great qualities this year, and will look to forge ahead with more wins as the season progresses. As always, fans are encouraged to come out and show your support!

LET’S GO VIKINGS!

The Vikings Elite Team was in exceptional form as they spanked Toronto CC by 9 wickets in their match on July 7th at King City 1B.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, the Vikings bowlers were in a frugal mood as they only conceded 156 for 7 in 38 overs (which was the revised over total due to the weather). Kenneth Kamyuka and Hemnarine Chattergoon produced similar figures, as they each took 3 wickets in 7 overs apiece for 32 and 37 runs respectively. Their wicket-taking was complemented by 1-33 in 8 overs from Hardik Kotak, as the bowlers all contributed in limiting the much-vaunted Toronto CC lineup to an ordinary total.

As in any chase, there were worries about pressure management when Vikings started their innings. The worries were exacerbated by the early loss of opener Chris Vernon, as Vikings stood at 15 for 1 in the early overs. Worries diminished slowly, steadily, and eventually for good, though, as opener Krishna Arjune made an excellent 67 not out (10×4) alongside one of the earlier heroes with the ball, Chattergoon, who made a fantastic 81 not out (8×4, 1×6). They saw the Vikings home to 158 for 1 after just 27.3 overs, and completed a clinical performance with ball and bat.

The win was certainly a continuation of the good work in their previous weekend, and would hopefully set the tone for the second game of their weekend double-header against Gujarat CC at King City 1C on July 8th. With a few key names missing for various reasons, the team will have to dig deep and prove the never-say-die attitude that is always preached in the vikings camp. Come out and lend your support!

The Elite boys of Vikings romped to a resounding 114 run win over Yorkshire CC on Canada Day, July 2nd, at King City 1E.

Coming off of a frustrating “wash out” in their previous encounter, the Vikings players had a glint of determination in their eyes, and promptly chose to bat upon winning the toss. This determination bore fruit, as the team reeled off 272 for 6 in their 50 over innings. There were double digit contributions throughout the order, but Jason Patraj’s responsible 119-ball 84 (8×4, 1×6) was the glue the held the innings together. Complemented by a classy 56 (4×4, 1×6) from Abdool Samad at number three, Vikings put on 97 runs for the third wicket to establish a platform from which to explode. “Explode” is exactly what number 7 Kenneth Kamyuka did as he bashed 39 off 22 balls (2×4, 2×6) to put the icing on the cake for the Vikings innings.

With a good total in the bag, the bowling attack was surgical in its dismantling of the Yorkshire team for just 158 all out in 24.2 overs. Only five bowlers were called upon, and Kamyuka (2-45 in 7 overs), Ian Baldeo (2-35 in 6 overs) and Hardik Kotak (1-33 in 4 overs) did early damage. The end was brought on swiftly by the seasoned and wily left arm spinner Shruti Singh, who took a five wicket haul for 25 runs in 5.2 overs.

The win has helped to fortify the team’s position on the Elite table, and is definitely important as they head into a double-header weekend on July 7th and 8th. On the 7th at King City 1C, Vikings faces Toronto CC, while on the 8th at King City 1B the boys square off with Gujarat CC. With the momentum gained from such a big win, the team will be on a high as they face two tough upcoming challenges. Come out and support the efforts!

LET’S GO VIKINGS!

Opening batsman Chris Vernon top-scored with 43, while Krishna Arjune and Avi Panday both made 41 to power the team’s total. In reply, Ahmadiyya could only muster 180 all out in 44 overs. Pacer Robert Davis snared a five wicket haul for 31 runs in 9 overs, brushing aside any late innings resistance from the challengers. The team used eight different bowlers, all of whom contributed to stifling the chase.
